Executive Summary

The Spirit of Knowledge Charter School’s 7th through 12th grade Worcester students will create value in their lives and the lives of others through high-standards academic learning, especially in math, science and technology, gaining admission to college, and developing a positive character.

Vision

At the Spirit of Knowledge Charter School (“the School”), the basic tenet of creating value will be defined as and measured through the following three functions:

  • Provide high-standards academic learning. Our students will achieve proficiency in reading, writing, math, sciences, and technology by mastering our innovative curriculum at a high standards level. For example, the students will understand and be able to apply math and science concepts; create interdisciplinary projects on innovative technological topics such as renewable energy and biotechnology and present them at special Stand and Deliver festivals; the students will be proficient in using technology in everyday schoolwork based on the School- wide 1:1 Learning with Technology strategy.
  • Prepare students for college. All of our students will be immersed in a college-going culture; they will visit colleges and learn about their programs. Although all college careers will be encouraged, our graduates will be specifically prepared to pursue majors that address modern technological challenges such as clean energy and biotechnology.
  • Instill positive school culture and character development. The School will embrace an inspiring school culture based on a value-creating philosophy and positive character-building system.

SOK Executive Director Letters

Director’s Letter

April 2, 2012

One of the most pleasant and difficult tasks as the executive director of SOKCS is writing the monthly director’s letter.  It is pleasant because I have the opportunity to write about our students, their successes and their future.  It is difficult due to time constraints that are inherent in the position.  However, I am committed to writing the letter at least once a month, even during the summer to keep the SOKCS community in the loop about events.

The board and the school leadership team are looking at locations for next year.  We ideally will be finalizing the location in the next two or so weeks.  When that is done, I will be letting everyone know and so we can plan for next year.  The new location will have facilities that we do not currently have such as labs for the sciences.  While we might not have a gym, we will have adequate PE space and some green space for the students to go outside.

We will be beginning an athletic program next year.  Lauren Chevrenet will be our athletic director.  Ms. Chevrenet is currently field hockey coach at Shrewsbury High School and comes to use with a strong background in coaching and athletic administration.  She is looking now for space for our athletic teams for both practice and games.  We will be taking a survey of the students this week to see what sports they would like to have.  At this time, we are anticipating boys’ and girls’ soccer and basketball and likely track in the spring.  We will also be looking at possibly a cheer leading and dance teams depending on interest.   The student council will be running a survey about the choice of a mascot in the near future.  Be prepared to cheer next year!

Our website details our upcoming open houses for prospective students.  If you know anyone who is interested in attending SOKCS, please have them call Ms. Bender.  We anticipate that we will be around 220 students next year as we grow to our maximum 275.  Our first open house had around 45 attendees and we would like to see that number grow over the next three open houses.  Please help spread the word about SOKCS!
